With the YouTube channel KerkKlets and the app of the same name, a need has been fulfilled that the congregation did not even know existed beforehand. That says Ronald Kornet, co-founder and initiator.

Church: Reformed Sliedrecht, the Church Chat app

We are a large reformed church with a traditional profile. At the beginning of the lockdown, when only a few people were allowed to attend the service, we thought: we are missing something when it comes to mutual contact. This need led to the KerkKlets program, which is broadcast every Sunday before and after the service on our YouTube channel. We share the latest news from the church community and we look ahead and look back at the church service. We also ask church members to introduce themselves in a video and share how they are doing. On average, about a thousand people watch each broadcast. In addition, a WhatsApp group was started. In that app group we shared all kinds of news, podcasts, beautiful texts or encouraging messages. But at some point that app was full; that is one of the reasons why we switched to the church app.

It surprised me which need fill out the app and YouTube channel.

Our church app now has around 900 users; from young to old. There is a general KerkKlets channel in which all kinds of news are shared, but in addition, all kinds of separate groups have also been created, exactly as hoped. In September, we organized all kinds of activities under the name 'Seven days of celebration' as a way of starting the new season. Photos and experiences were then placed on the app, so that you could also enjoy it if you had not attended the activity yourself. We have a frequently used group 'Marktplaats', where church members buy and sell things among themselves. And if someone has a problem, whether it is church-related or not, there is always another church member who will come to the rescue. Of course, many insights, beautiful songs and articles and experiences in the field of faith are also shared - something that in my opinion is the core of being a church.
That too has taken off: there is a positive atmosphere around it, people enjoy watching and using it. I was surprised by the need the app and the YouTube channel meet. We are a large congregation, with thousands of people, and to be honest, we simply do not always know each other well enough. Now it is easier to stay informed. We notice that when organizing church activities. Normally, as a teenager, you do not know exactly what the older members of the congregation are up to, or vice versa, but with the app you learn about each other much more quickly. The app does not replace congregation life, but it enriches it - because you are closer to each other.
