Many churches are focused on central sending in their technology. A small group of people runs the website and there is a newsletter that is sent out every now and then. As a church, you want to be inviting and welcoming, so a good website is indeed essential, but mainly as a business card to others. A church app is really for and by church members. Connection was therefore the most important reason for us to want an app. Christ Church Amsterdam is an international church with three locations in the city. All kinds of people come together in our community: expats, bilingual families, tourists, but also just Dutch people who feel at home in our church and have no problem following the service in English. The app is a fantastic tool to stay involved, with each other and with the church.

All kinds of messages are posted in the app. Sometimes these are posts that make you think. And not just from the pastor, but also from church members who have read something nice and want to share it. Other times the posts are more practical in nature: 'Hey, I can't play in the band on Sunday, is there a guitarist who can step in'? Thanks to the option to create different groups, we can ensure that messages only reach the people it concerns. After all, someone at location A does not need to know that someone is needed to pour coffee at location B. Now we are rid of Facebook and Whatsapp, but as a church we communicate in an environment that is safe from a privacy point of view. The collection function is also an enrichment. Many digital collection solutions are complicated to use, but giving in the app is very simple. And thanks to the QR codes linked to iDeal, guests can also easily donate.
For us as a congregation it was very important that we could link the church app to our website and Google Workplace, the program we use to run the church digitally behind the scenes. If you wanted to know something, you used to have to look in all kinds of different places. Now you grab your phone, open the app and you can find everything that has to do with the church in one place. Whether that is the liturgy for the church service, the program of a certain circle, the schedules for who has to serve coffee or administrative documents from the church council or treasurer. That is enormously valuable.
